Replace the media when the temperature drop at the outlet falls below 8 degrees Fahrenheit on a 95-degree day at low humidity. You can measure this with a simple infrared thermometer. Other signs: visible matting or clumping of the cellulose fibers, persistent musty odor that does not clear with cleaning, water streaming unevenly down the face (dry channels), or edge fraying that exceeds one inch. Our testing showed that the HydroTek media outlasts standard media by roughly one season in direct sun before replacement is needed, based on the edge-coat integrity.

Can I use the HydroTek media in a cooler that previously used standard media?

Yes. The dimensions are identical, and the retaining system is the same. There is no compatibility issue. We installed the HydroTek set in a four-year-old Jetstream 270 that had always used standard Portacool media. The fit was identical, and the water distribution system required no modifications. The HydroTek panels are a direct drop-in upgrade. There is no need to change any other component of the cooler.
